How a 17-year-old made $10,000 a month selling candy

A teenager built a $10,000-a-month business selling candy. The point is not the candy. It is that business fundamentals do not care how old you are.

At seventeen I was, in my own words, the Pablo Escobar of candy at my school. I sold snacks and drinks to rich and lazy kids, and to the staff room, and at the peak I was making ten thousand dollars a month doing it. In 2017 everyone thought I was the weird kid dealing candy out of his dorm room. Looking back, it was the best business education I ever got.

It is easy to file this under cute teenager story. That is a mistake. Strip away the age and the product and what is left is a clean demonstration of the few things that actually make any business work. Most adults running far more complicated companies have never gotten these right.

The arbitrage that started it

I was in the supermarket and saw a pack of Coca-Cola at fifty percent off, ten dollars instead of twenty. The vending at school sold a single can for two dollars. The math did itself. I bought three packs of Coke, a pack of Canada Dry, and three packs of Gatorade, about eighty dollars of stock, and carried roughly a hundred cans back to school while everyone stared.

I made some posters under the brand "Phil and Chill," walked room to room, and sold out in thirty minutes. Four hundred dollars in half an hour as a seventeen-year-old. That was the day I decided I would never go to university.

It was demand, not candy

The product was never the point. I had a captive audience with money and nothing to do. During evening homework hours I knocked on every door and offered a soda or a snack while they worked. On weekends, when everyone was bored and the nearest store was thirty minutes away, I was right there. Same Coke they could get for fifty cents, sold for two dollars, because I removed the friction.

The vending in the same building, with cheaper prices, sold almost nothing once I started. That is something I still use: people buy from people, not machines. A machine only wins if it is faster, cheaper, or the only option.

Sell it before you make it

My one real mistake at the start was spending eighty dollars before I had a single confirmed buyer. It worked out, but it was a gamble. So I changed the order. I would walk around offering Sprite and Fanta I did not even have. If people said yes, I would say we were out and deliver it the next day. If they said no, I had risked nothing.

Sell the product first, then create it. That single reordering applies to maybe eighty percent of the businesses you could start right now.

Margin, then leverage

At around five thousand a month I was running close to a ninety percent margin, because my only costs were the product and a commission. So I added leverage. I hired a friend as a sales rep: I gave him candy, he sold it, he came back with the cash, I paid his commission and reloaded him. I could not get into the girls' dorm, so I recruited a rep who could. I had a Mexican friend bring back candy his classmates wanted, and convinced my mom to ship a hundred Milka bars from Germany. They cost me about a dollar twenty-five each landed and I sold them for five, because nobody in Canada could get them. Exclusive, unique, unavailable anywhere else. That is a marketing angle you do not have to manufacture.

The boring parts that scale

When I graduated, the candy run ended, but the capital and what I took from it started my first real online business. These are the five I still run on, and they have nothing to do with candy.

What actually transfers

  • Master risk and research. Your money, time, and energy are limited. Validate before you deep-dive. Test the water before you jump.
  • Stay flexible. I kept adding products, channels, and angles. A business that does not adapt dies.
  • Marketing and sales win, not the product. I counted foot traffic and put posters where the eyeballs were. How you sell beats what you sell.
  • Respect the legal side. The principal could have shut me down. Later in life, ignoring this cost me a business. Profit does not save you from regulation.
  • Find someone further ahead. Somebody who owned properties and companies, and who would be straight with me, saved me years.

The candy is a distraction. The system is the point, and the system is available to anyone willing to start small and let it compound.

I will show you how I was the Pablo Escobar of candy at my school and how I was even able to make $10,000 per month with it at just 17 I was selling snacks and drinks to Rich and lazy kids and even teachers with regular customers so today it's apparently pretty normal to sell candy at school but

back then in 2017 I was just seen as the weird kid who was trying to deal some candy in this video I will actually show you all the original spreadsheets I made back then to track all the sales and all the expenses I will even show you all the marketing posters I was just pasting around all of

the school like a little crazy kid at one point I even hired sales reps I will show you what I did and I will show you how I was basically just sitting back collecting money like Pablo Escobar and how you can replicate exactly the same for your own business for years and years now I simply built businesses

in the shadows and now I want to start sharing here on YouTube how I've lost hundreds of thousands of dollars and how I've earned millions of dollars and simply what I learned in the past 7 to 8 years doing the boring work every single day a few weeks ago I sat down and thought okay there are three

stages of Entrepreneurship the first one is you get paid for what you do and I build websites I built funnels I sold physical products I did sales calls all that stuff I did the physical work the second step is you get paid for what you know I've advised multiple companies on their strategies on their marketing and branding

and I've built an amazing team that I constantly push more and more and that I teach a lot and the third step is you get paid for who you are and that is my focus right now to Simply build my brand and share as much knowledge and all of my wisdom and experience from the past few years

and for people to Simply know me for the person that is able to give you as much knowledge as possible about business about Finance about branding and all those different Topics in the entrepreneurship Niche I've traveled to all the fancy places on Instagram I've met all the big influencers I've worked with many many famous and successful entrepreneurs

and I realized for myself what I actually enjoy doing the most is actually talking to people and simply helping them to solve their problems and that's it I spent weeks and months with multi-millionaires partying working talking about deep topics why they're successful if they're happy and simply about their problems because those multi-millionaires they're the same as you

they're just people and like this I got huge insights into the workflows of multi-million dollar companies and entrepreneurs I saw exactly what they're doing daily what they think about how do they work and are they actually happy and now it's time for me to reveal those secrets and let out everything I've learned and experienced in the past

few years to the public when I was 17 the first book I ever read on business and mindset was Rich Dad Poor Dad and I instantly thought to myself okay how can I Implement what I've learned I'm hooked I want to do business so when I was in the supermarket one day I saw a huge offer there

were Coca-Cola cans like a full pack for 50% off $10 instead of $20 and so I thought to myself the vending machine at school is selling these Coke cans for $2 each so why why couldn't I that would mean I could sell five cans of that pack and the rest of the pack I could simply drink for

free or I could sell all the different cans to get a huge profit so I told my friends to load up the carts and let me tell you when I'm excited about a project I'll go all in so I bought three packs of Coca-Cola one pack of Canada Dry and three packs of Gatorade in total I paid

like $80 for all the different cans I rushed back to school where basically everybody looked at me and my friends like we were some crazy people why do we buy 100 cans of Coca-Cola but I didn't care why would you as a 17-year-old who just got hooked to the most addictive drug there is on the planet money

I actually sat down thought of some prices that I could charge and what name I could use to design some posters I came up with the most creative name I could ever come up with Phill and chill I put up posters and I instantly ran around the whole school to see if people wanted to buy something I

was lucky because this was actually the first mistake I did from which you can learn even though it was just $80 you should never invest a lot of money into your startup before validating the idea I could have ran around school first and simply asked people if they wanted to buy something they open for it and then

I could see how the demand looks like and if there's a big demand I could then simply buy the product and then I can deliver the product to the people this is what I for example did with other products I told people hey you can buy Sprite you can buy Fanta and like other sodas which I didn't

even have and if they said yes if they wanted to have it I simply told them oh I'm sorry we're out of stock right now but you can have some Coca-Cola I will get your Sprite tomorrow so obviously what I'm telling you here this is just for selling candy but this can be applied to all businesses no

matter if you're making 10,000 100,000 or a million per month lower your risk as much as possible and do market research to really validate your idea to not at the end build a product that people don't want sell the product first then create it this obviously does apply to every single business on the market but generally speaking

this applies maybe to 80% of the businesses that you can start right now so what happened to my launch on my first day I can tell you from my point of view it was a total success I sold out in 30 minutes I ran from room to room and simply asked the people hey what do you want

and as soon as they placed the order I ran back to my room got the item and gave it to them this is how I sold out in 30 minutes when I came back to my room and seeing all the empty boxes after that half an hour I I thought I owned the world I thought I I

discovered a secret trick to life because it was so new to me I made $400 and 30 minutes as a 17-year-old I know it was a bit too soon but on that day that time that was where I decided I will never join University ever in my life so basically my whole week now consisted of going to

the supermarket on the weekends buying all kinds of soda and selling them during the week one big thing I actually learned from this as well is how to do inventory management I was basically running around on prep time every single evening that means during the homework time where everybody had to sit in their room to do homework

I was simply knocking on the door and asking them if they wanted to have soda or a snack while doing their homework this for example later on looking back at it was perfect because everybody was in their room they had nothing else to do and they w wanted the distraction from their boring homework so basically almost everybody

said yes to some soda or some candy the other time where I was selling a lot was during the weekend everybody was bored nobody knew what to do and everybody was just watching movies playing video games and so on so it was perfect instead of them having to go 30 minutes to the next supermarket I had it

right there they could simply buy from me even though I sold the Coca-Cola for $2 they could get exactly the same Coca-Cola for 50 in the super Supermarket I actually ran out of stock multiple times so that meant I had to start planning my inventory and see exactly when I will run out approximately and if I have

to buy more next time or if I have to quickly run to the store to buy some more products so as you can see just with this small example of selling candy in your dorm room you are able to learn valuable lessons that I for example later on apply to my million-dollar e-commerce stores I've designed posters for

marketing I came up with price lists and promos like for example every Tuesday and Thursday you got $1 off if you bought a combo of soda and candy together I then walked around the school and simply sat down and counted how many people actually walking by that exact place put it all into my notes and targeted the

places with the highest traffic that is exactly where I would put my marketing posters again it's pretty simple but something to learn a lot of traffic means a lot of eyeballs for your marketing and if you place it right you can get a lot of marketing for free I for example also put posters right next to our

vending machine which actually didn't sell one thing since I started selling even though might have brought convenience to people you can learn that people want to buy from people not from machines they only buy from a machine if it's faster better or there's simply no other option then one day the principal called me in he told me

that I can't just sell candy at such a high level just all for cash he was right but I basically just told him hey look I have a small lemonade stand and that's it well I had a premium version of that but since I was graduating a couple of months later he said it's all right for the

rest of the school year again no matter what business you do or how profitable you are there will always be regulations and laws beware of anything that could easily harm your business because he could have expelled me or forced me to stop my very first Mentor was actually teacher at that school he taught me a lot which

is another Point get yourself a mentor for every single area in your life in which you want to succeed the things I've learned from him would have taken me years to learn just by myself he owned multiple properties and even bars and companies all around the country but he was simply teaching for fun he was living for

free on the campus and he got free education for his kids he actually told me to look into my sales process and how I could improve it because I only had a few months left before graduating maybe I will actually tell you about all the things he taught me but that's in another video let me know maybe

we can even have a call together where I will ask him all the different questions so based on what he said I looked into sales and what I then did was I hired a sales rep I had a friend who was also into business but he didn't really know what to do I told him my idea and

he was all in right away and it was pretty simple I gave him candy he was selling it whenever he ran out of candy he simply came back to me gave him the money I gave him his commission and gave him some more candy to sell and that's it at that point I was already making $5,000 per

month with about 90% profit margin because all the cost I had were the products and the percentage for the commission of the sales rep and that's it he was from Mexico and since there were a lot of Mexicans at our school I knew I had to capitalize on it I did a market research by simply asking what

they likeed the most and then I told my Mexican friends that when they went home for holidays they could simply bring back as much candy as possible and that is how I introduced more products at that point my parents couldn't really believe me how was this 17-year-old little kid selling candy at school and makinging so much money

with it but basically I told my mom to look into milk or chocolate since they were a lot cheaper in Germany and actually you couldn't really get them in Canada anyways and after some convincing and many many phone calls later she bought a 100 milka bars and shipped them over to Canada where I was going to school

with shipping and product costs it cost me around $125 to buy the milab bars and I sold them for $5 people were begging me to buy more I mean it's milka it's super delicious I loved it as well but my marketing angle was super simple it's milk from Germany and it's not even available in Canada even the

German students and the German teachers were buying it although they knew that in Germany it cost like 80 to 90 cents to buy them and here they had to pay $5 for it and here again is something to learn create a product that is exclusive unique and that people can't get anywhere else so now I had all

kinds of candy I had a good marketing and I even hired one more sales repap and I was ready to go into new new unte markets the girls dorm as you might be able to see I'm not a girl and so I was not allowed in there and so I had to think of something I basically just

interviewed some girls here and there by simply talking to them about the idea and to see if they're a good candidate the one that stood out the most I simply told her hey let's start and right at that time a few minutes later she already had the candy and it was simple I gave her the candy as

soon as she ran out with the candy she came back to me gave me the money I gave her her Commission and I gave her new Candy to sell that month I hit $10,000 my first time and I didn't even notice it after looking at my spreadsheets a few days later I realized that I hit five figures

I was so busy that I actually didn't really care about the amount of money anymore but I was really happy and I rewarded myself with a huge pizza and at that time I was really into bodybuilding and I was dieting a lot so it was an amazing reward at this point I collected a bit of money and

you might ask yourself what did he do with all the money first of all it was all cash that means I had bags full of cash like a drug dealer my sister actually came visiting me at one point and we decided to go to the bank together and deposit the money we even created little coin papers to

put together the coins into maybe $1 and qu $2 and qu and so on I put the builds all into stacks and then I put it all into my backpack and when I actually opened my backpack at the bank the bank tell teller didn't know what to say there was a 17-year-old little kid with a backpack full

off cash after explaining that I had a lemonade stand at my school and that I was getting some pocket money from my parents here and there which basically was true but not to such a big extent she accepted it and deposited the money onto my bank account and I basically just continued this process of buying candy and

giving it to my sales reps and collecting the money until I graduated a few months later this actually gave me my starting capital for my first online business which I will talk about in the next few videos and when I graduated I knew it was over but for myself I knew it was an amazing experience and I

was able to learn a lot I would say I learned more than any book could have taught me in that time and I was ready for the big world and the first sales rep I hired even continued with Phil and chill the next few years because he was a grade lower than me okay so now we will

get to the actual good part of the story we will analyze what I did and learn from it this is the most important step in life and the business I would say to sit back and look exactly at what you have done and analyze exactly what you did good what you did bad and how you can improve

yourself Kobe Bryant for example is a huge example for this he was rewatching his games over and over and over again and was analyzing every single second of his game to improve everything he was basically known for his crazy approach to Simply study his game footage the whole time and I mean look at his performance in the

NBA I think that speaks for itself and that is exactly what we will do right now so if you actually want to learn how to apply these steps into your business here are three different things that you can actually do simply click the link Down Below in the description write a comment or text me on Instagram if

you want to keep a private I'm here to help and I would love to hear your ideas and thoughts and since this is my first YouTube video I would love to hear what you have to say but now that we actually went through it all let's go to the most important part what can you learn from this

story I would say there are a few different things that you can actually apply today to your business so what I'm going to tell you right now must not only be applied to business but you can also apply it to your own life the first step is mastering risk and research that basically just means don't gamble with

your resources you have limited money limited time limited energy so validate your idea before deep diving into the project by understanding the market and testing the waters you minimize risks and make smarter choices step two is flexibility if you don't adapt you're going to go out of business as you have seen I was constantly innovating I introduced

New Mexican candy I got ger and chocolate and I was constantly getting new drinks and chips and so on from the store this basically just shows the power of staying flexible and creative in a dynamic Market step three is creating killer marketing and great sales it's not just about what you sell but it's about how you sell

it trading amazing marketing targeting the right locations and simply understanding who your customers are and what they want is a crucial step in business step four is navigating through the legal water you can't be ignorant to regular ulations just stay on the right side of the law if you want to avoid unpleasant surprises it doesn't matter how

profitable you are and how amazing the business is going if you have legal problems it might destroy the business this is what I actually had to learn later on in life by losing hundreds of thousands of dollars and actually losing a full business that was generating millions of dollars I'll actually share the story in another video step

five is look for mentors don't go into it alone just look for people who already walked the path before you and follow their stat ask for guidance and they're going to help you what a mentor can teach you often times saves you hours and hours of work and often times also many failures and like this your path

to Success is Not only faster but also easier so if you have any questions just let me know in the comments I'll try my best to answer all of them and go into as much detail as possible so whatever you got let me know and I'm happy to help thanks bye
